Obituary & Condolences

IN MEMORY OF AVRIL ROY

Written by Marianne Marks

On 9 December 2016 my beloved friend and long-time colleague, Avril Roy, passed away after a year-long, hard fought battle with cancer.

Avril spent the major part of her working life – 34 years – serving Herzlia High School in many different capacities and making a difference in the lives of hundreds of Herzlia pupils. At the time that Avril retired, she was the highly experienced Consumer Studies teacher, meticulous Grade 10 supervisor and an expert and effective Head of Grade 10. Over the time she was at Herzlia, Avril was involved in many, different aspects of the school: many years ago, she was in charge of organising the Matric Dance; because of her excellent administrative and organisational skills, she played a huge role in organising exams and invigilation; at one time, she managed substitutions and attendance of pupils and teachers; she played a pivotal role in the planning and preparation of the High School timetable; the list goes on and on…

As a member of the school’s Senior Management Team and the Staff Executive, Avril provided me with wise counsel and valuable support. Her problem-solving ability and clear thinking were legendary.

Avril had a strong connection with very, very many members of staff over the years and had a special relationship with those who spent time as Grade 10 supervisors. Everyone enjoyed her quirky sense of humour and mock fierceness but respected her professionalism and the high standards she demanded.

I know that for Avril, it was the wonderful relationships she forged with her pupils, who appreciated her for her wit, sound advice and humour that were the most important. Even the successive years of Grade 10’s soon learned that under the stern exterior they first encountered was the kindest heart. Avril was caring and empathetic and felt deeply for her pupils, especially those who were struggling with the difficulties that life can bring. Her pupils continue to remember her classes long after they have left Herzlia for the fun they had and for the life lessons they learned.

On behalf of Avril’s colleagues, pupils and friends at the High School, past and present, I wish Avril’s husband Brian, her sons, Daniel and Jonathan and their families ‘long life’. Avril will be in our hearts forever.
