Sports and Extra-Murals

The High School offers a full range of activities to cater for the needs of our students.

Facilities are available, on and off campus for all the popular team games including basketball, cricket, waterpolo, soccer, netball and rugby as well as for the more individual sports such as tennis, swimming, squash, golf and chess.

Teams are entered in the various inter-school leagues and have proved to be most competitive.
Among the schools present and past pupils are a number of South African representatives and numerous sportsmen and sportswomen with provincial and Maccabi colours in a variety of sports.

Debating

Herzlia High School has two committed and motivated debating teams, a junior team (Grade 10’s) and a senior team (Grades 11 and 12). The teacher in charge of debating is Mrs Bev Coburn whose main role is administrative. The student leader is Daniel Kaliski under whose inspiring leadership the debaters continue to grow. He is ably assisted by the other two members of the executive, Rebecca Segal and Gary White.  Coaches from the UCT Debating Union have also helped to improve the teams’ skills.

The internal debating league (initiated by Daniel Kaliski), meets regularly to practise debating skills and to prepare for upcoming Rotary debates, which are held on Monday evenings at least twice a term. We have enjoyed great success, not only at inter-school level via the Rotary Inter-school League, but also provincially and nationally.

This year a decision was made to revive the public speaking competition and it is hoped that this competition will be held later this term.
