A Herzlia education is a journey that often begins at 18 months in pre-primary until matric (usually age 18). Since 2017 Herzlia has celebrated this rite of passage called Chai to Chai. Matric pupils lead this event filled with fun and educational activities, but mainly to spend time together and connect with their ‘little brothers and sisters’ in Grade 1 so they become inspired to follow their footsteps to being proud Herzlians, menschen and future leaders just like them!
Anton Krupenia, Principal of Herzlia Weizmann Primary explains that “On Tuesday the Grade 1s were treated to a fantastic carnival hosted by the Matric Class of 2024 at the High School. This annual “Chai to Chai” event has quickly become a valued tradition for both Grade 1s and the Matrics alike. It is always heartwarming to witness the older pupils enthusiastically interacting with the Grade 1s, fostering a sense of camaraderie and mentorship. The Grade 12s created a fun atmosphere with various activities to keep their new Grade 1 “buddies” entertained and engaged. It was a busy two hours spent with beading, science experiments, crafts, baking and games. Our Weizmann Grade 1s also enjoyed making new friends with their Highlands peers. There were many happy but tired faces on the bus ride back, with all exclaiming that it was the best day ever!
Chatting with some of the Weizmann Matrics, they expressed an amazement saying that they find it hard to believe that they were that small and juvenile. We remind them that they were, and we have the pictures to prove it! This event serves as a poignant reminder of the interconnectedness within our school community, where each generation contributes to the growth and development of the next.”
Outgoing Herzlia High School Head Student, Ethan Werb, currently in matric says “Although it is only the beginning of the year, it is evident that Chai to Chai will be a highlight of 2024 not only for the matrics and the Grade 1s but for all of Herzlia. This year’s Chai to Chai was magical. Matrics and Grade 1s had an awesome time; running around, playing games, telling stories and, most notably, making incredible memories. This day was so special, not only because of the fun activities but because of the meaningful connections the pupils made. Chai to Chai has the ability to unite, strengthen and build the future of Herzlia. This is a tradition to be proud of and we hope to continue to develop the program even further. From Chai to Chai to L’Dor V’Dor, let us celebrate love and life forever more.”
