1978 Reunion in Cape Town
1978 Reunion in Cape Town
By Jacqui (Penkin) Biess
The Class of 1978 Reunion was held on 16 December 2018 at the lovely Camps Bay home of Natalie and Clifford Barnett. We were blessed with a perfect Cape Town summers day. There were only 10 of us from the class of ’78, along with a few partners, which made the reunion really intimate.
I created a Facebook chat group and we posted photos to the group while the reunion was happening. There was a lot of FOMO especially from Karen Fisher, in Canada who was hoping to be WhatsApp video called into the reunion, but it didn’t work out. Lots of our classmates commented on the photos in the Facebook chat and said how much they wished they could be with us.
We had a delicious dinner and cocktails, swapped life stories, laughed a lot and reminisced about classmates that had passed on and planned to see each other more often. It was great to make contact again, some of us as grandparents and some still have children at school. Some of us are widows, some divorced, and some still happily married.Paul Kaplan popped in for a short visit as his wife, Evelyn, is not well. We wish her only good health.
Representing from Cape Town were Clifford Barnett, Steven Harris, Julian Reitstein, Michael Meltzer, Paul Kaplan, Karen (Michaels) Fig, Janine (Marshall) Mirkin, Karen (Marshall) Boekstein , Jacqui (Penkin) Biess and David Peerutin.
Jacqui brought a delicious chocolate cake from her bakery, Charly’s Bakery, with the school emblem on an edible photo. There was a very tuneless rendition of our school song as it was in our days. (many of us couldn’t remember all the words).
