In 2021, when we’d all been locked up for months and our sense of reason had largely disappeared a group of eight friends decided to take on the 200km Namibia Crossing, a 5-day run across the Richtersveld on the border between South Africa and Namibia.

After long months of training and anticipation, on Monday the 20th of June, we all shuffled nervously into place on a cold and windy starting line near Sendelingsdrift, for the start of our epic adventure. What followed was 5 days of running through a starkly beautiful landscape of mountains, riverbeds and gravel plains. The environment and running challenge would have been enough, but on top of that every day once we had finished, we got to spend quality time hanging out in a series of extremely comfortable and well managed camp sites.
And now a truly amazing 5 days of running in the vast wilderness of the Richtersveld is behind us. All of us who signed up to this challenge a year ago completed it, with soaring spirits and a few aches and pains to remind us of our effort! We also identified two causes, to give our race a higher purpose and help us through the tough times on the run, both of which we believe are worthy of support.
Firstly, Elias Munawa, a distinguished young man in Cape Town who has a dream to study international business at university and of playing international rugby. He is a dedicated, energetic and charismatic young man, a school prefect who consistently makes the top 10 academic list at Bosmansdam High School and is captain of the U19 Rugby team. We have set up a Back-a-Buddy campaign to try to raise some funds for Elias’ university tuition and to support his rugby training.
Secondly, we chose the Rainforest Trust (https://lnkd.in/gGuZRB2p), which uses 100% of their donations to purchase and protect the most threatened tropical forests, saving endangered wildlife through partnerships and community engagement.
Thanks so much to everyone that supported us. I had a chat with Elias last week and he commented that he felt re-energised and committed knowing that he had someone in his corner, backing him. Based on the support we received, it looks like he has a whole army in his corner!
