Across all Herzlia schools, Jewish values are not only taught, but they are lived.

One powerful example of this is the Zichron Menachem hair donation initiative, where pupils and community members choose to donate their hair to help children who have lost theirs during cancer treatment.

Zichron Menachem is an Israeli organisation that supports children with cancer and their families. Founded in loving memory of Menachem Erenthal, the organisation provides hospital visits, counselling, camps and emotional support for families navigating illness. One of its most meaningful projects is a special hair bank that creates wigs for children and young people up to the age of 25 who lose their hair during treatment.

Each year, our Herzlia and greater Cape Town community steps forward to take part.

For many, it is a deeply personal moment. Cutting off years of growth is not a small decision, but it is done with a clear purpose: to give confidence, dignity, and comfort to another child facing a difficult journey.

One parent described the experience:

“Having our hair cut for Zichron Menachem was a really meaningful experience for my daughter and I, knowing that this will bring confidence, dignity, comfort, smiles, and hope to children bravely facing an illness.” Romy 

For pupils like Ellie, the moment can be both emotional and empowering: “My experience with Zichron Menachem was amazing. I knew from the second I was told about it that I wanted to donate my hair. I was very nervous when they tied up my hair, but also excited. When it was cut, I felt so proud. From that day, it has been the greatest thing that I have ever done.” 

Moments like these reflect what Herzlia aims to nurture in its pupils: empathy, courage, and a sense of responsibility toward others. 

Through initiatives like this, pupils learn that small acts of kindness can make a very real difference in someone else’s life.
