Herzlia High School proudly represented at the African Gaming Championship (AGC) School League Showdown on 17 July, with our pupils competing against schools from across South Africa in both Fortnite and FIFA – EA Sports FC (Electronic Arts Football Club).
Our team delivered an outstanding performance, with Joshua Gamaroff finishing second nationally in FIFA after a closely contested final on the main stage. Herzlia’s Fortnite team also achieved an impressive result, placing 12th overall with 105 points.
The competition highlights the continued growth of Herzlia’s Esports programme, which provides pupils with opportunities to develop strategic thinking, teamwork, communication, resilience and problem-solving in a structured and competitive environment.
One particularly meaningful aspect of the tournament was ensuring our pupils could continue competing while honouring the arrival of Shabbat. Working closely with the organisers, arrangements were made for them to complete the remainder of the competition from home before Shabbat began, allowing them to participate fully while remaining true to their Jewish values.
Kerry-Ann van der Merwe, UHS Head of Innovation, says that “Beyond the game itself, what I love about Esports is how it breaks down social walls. It gives kids from all walks of life, who might never normally cross paths, a chance to connect over a shared passion, feel genuinely valued, and build a supportive community together.”
