Herzlia Weizmann Primary hosted its much-loved annual Lessem Trophy competition, an eagerly anticipated inter-house public speaking contest for our Grade 6 pupils. The event honours the legacy of Ralph Lessem, who was passionate about the art of public speaking, and continues to inspire our pupils to find their voices.
This year, nine prepared speakers and nine unprepared speakers, three from each house, took to the stage. The prepared speakers had just over a week to develop their speeches from a selection of 22 thought-provoking topics, while the unprepared speakers rose to the challenge of creating a speech in just ten minutes from imaginative “Would you rather…” prompts.
For the first time, the entire Intermediate Phase was invited to watch. The audience was inspired and amazed by the confidence, eloquence and creativity displayed. True to tradition, the Grade 6 pupils ran the event themselves, with one chairing proceedings, another introducing the judges, and finally a pupil delivering a heartfelt vote of thanks.
We were honoured to welcome our judges: Mrs Lauren Palte, Deputy Head of the High School and Miss Mdedelwa, High School teacher and international public speaking champion. Their expertise and encouragement made the experience even more meaningful.
In the end, it was Gideon that claimed the Lessem Trophy for 2025. But more importantly, the competition showcased the talent, courage, and spirit of every child who stepped up to the podium.
As Anton Krupenia, Principal of Herzlia Weizmann Primary, reflected: “Well done to all involved! The standard this year was particularly high across both the Prepared and Unprepared Speeches. Grade 5s, you have big shoes to fill in 2026!”
Mazaltov to all our Grade 6s for an unforgettable Lessem Trophy!
