1960 Reunion in Cape Town
1960 Reunion in Cape Town
by Loretta (Falk) Helman and Sally (Dickman) Frankental
It takes a visitor from abroad to facilitate a gathering of 1960 classmates in Cape Town, who generally don’t meet often. Loretta (Falk) Helman from Toronto was the conduit for this gathering, which took place on 10 February 2019 at the home of Solly Lison.
The turn out with spouses and partners was excellent considering that so many of the class of 1960 have immigrated to all parts of the world. Unfortunately, some could not attend but for those who did, it was an evening of much reminiscing and laughter as we shared stories about teachers, pranks and the role that Herzlia School played in shaping our lives.
The picture from Grade 1 (Sub A) was a good jumping off point for sharing many memories. We all enjoyed a delicious meal as we ‘chatted’ for a number of hours.
Special thanks to Solly Lison for hosting and offering his home. We hope that we will have many more occasions to meet in good health and in good spirits. In addition Sally, Solly and Loretta had a marvellous tour of the Herzlia Highlands campus with Paula Cohen one morning. Our memories of what the school was like when it first
opened at this site, are barely recognisable, since there are so many additional buildings and state of the art facilities. It was most impressive to see the development of what is a shining star in education in South Africa. The class of 1960 started out in Hope Street and were very involved in the opening of the Highlands campus in 1957.
It was most interesting to interact briefly with some of the current teachers who informed us of recent trends in various subjects which helped us understand the injection of Jewish values and content throughout all the syllabi.
