Mazaltov to Ross van Schoor, Head of Aquatics, on being selected to represent SA in the Men’s Water Polo team to play in the World Aquatics Cup in Turkey in December 2024.
Ross says that “making the South African men’s water polo team didn’t happen overnight. It was built on countless early mornings, unseen hours, and moments of struggle. It’s easy to see the success, but it’s the hard work behind the scenes that truly counts. Remember, hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard. You don’t need to be the most talented, but if you keep showing up and learning, you’ll go far. My failures taught me as much as my successes—they made me stronger and better prepared. Embrace setbacks, learn from them, and let them fuel your journey forward.” While studying for his Sports Science degree, Ross represented the University of Stellenbosch for 4 years, becoming their vice captain and winning the USSA Tournament.
Ross has played in Currie Cup Tournaments (National Championships) since 2018 and his club team are the current trophy holders. Ross has been coaching at Herzlia since 2021 and appointed Head of Aquatics in 2022. His selection for the National team is wonderful news for the Herzlia community, especially after recent celebrations for the opening of the new Herzlia Aquatic Centre.
Ross is not the only water polo coach in the South African team! Herzlia recruits the very best water polo coaches, many of whom have represented South Africa at age group level. Rourke Fisher, a new water polo coach at the Herzlia, has also been selected to go to the World Aquatics Cup in December 2024.
