Music is more than just notes on a page – it’s an experience that shapes young minds. At Herzlia High School music is an integral part of education helping pupils develop discipline, teamwork, and creative thinking.
On Human Rights Day, Herzlia High School’s talented Jazz Band took to the stage at the St. Joseph’s Marist Music Festival on the Lawn performing alongside ensembles from St. Cyprian’s, St. Joseph’s Marist College, Settlers High School, and Eersterivier High School. Herzlia’s musicians showcased their dedication and passion for jazz, highlighting the importance of music education.
Earning a place in the Herzlia High School Jazz Band takes hard work and commitment. This ensemble is made up of dedicated musicians who rehearse twice a week, refining their craft and growing as artists. Led by Kerryn Duff, the band features pupils:
- Piano – Zara May & Reza Morrison
- Guitar – Benjamin Levinson
- Drums – Tal Ayache
- Bass Guitar – Amit Melnik
- Trumpet – Samuel Musikanth
- Vocalists – Lia Sachs, Alexand Franco, Alulutho Witbooi
Music isn’t just about performance – it’s about learning how to collaborate, listen, and express yourself. Research shows that pupils involved in music develop stronger cognitive skills, better memory, and greater emotional intelligence. Whether they pursue music professionally or not, these skills support success in countless fields.
Music Matters at Herzlia and we have a strong tradition of nurturing musical talent, with multiple ensembles and performance opportunities. The Jazz Band, started in 2022 by saxophone teacher Kerryn Duff, has become a key part of the Music Department, inspiring younger pupils to develop their skills and join in when they reach senior years.
Herzlia’s Head of Music, Danielle Wynter, shared her pride for her pupils:
“I am so proud of our Jazz Band for their outstanding performance at St. Joseph’s Marist Music on the Lawn Festival. It is an honour to see our pupils grow into skilled musicians and confident performers. Music education is a journey – one that teaches resilience, creativity, and teamwork. A special thank you to our dedicated music educators and to Kerryn Duff, whose vision and passion continue to elevate our music programme.”
Music education is more than just an extracurricular activity – it strengthens critical thinking, builds confidence, and teaches perseverance. Many successful individuals, from scientists to CEOs, credit their musical training as an essential part of their development. At Herzlia, we believe in providing opportunities for our pupils to excel in every area, and music plays a key role in that journey.
For pupils, parents, and educators alike, the St. Joseph’s Festival was a reminder of why music matters. It’s about more than just the notes – it’s about growth, connection, and lifelong learning.
